Coastal Hazards

Based on information from Coastal Care, Barbados has major coastal problems when it comes to "beach erosion but the most serious threat to the beaches is the loss of offshore coral reefs through pollution, primarily caused by domestic sewage ". The website also explains how Caribbean island do suffer from erosion do to natural causes but an island like Barbados that's known for tourism has to be protect it's beaches. From the beach erosion the island northwest coast is unable to work through before people used to be able to walk miles through northwest coast now due to sea walls, boulders, and crashing surf made it impossible for people to enjoy those walks along the coast. Barbados Coastal Zone Management Unit, is an agency in charge of controlling erosion, the agency however, believes that global warming is the main culprit for the island erosion. Besides global warming being a threat it is recognized that "rising sea levels and severe storms play a role but with the balance of demands for development and preservation" Barbados with be able to control erosion. According to Coastal Care, IDB financed Barbados Coastal Conservation Program. The program has put in place research, pollution control and anti erosion measures. Barbados already have been reducing pollution with sewage treatment systems and solid waste disposable plants.

Extreme weather

When looking into extreme weather information about Barbados I found out that Barbados is vulnerable to natural disasters and extreme events. Barbados is associated with SIDS, small island development states, which implies that Barbados environmental, economic, and society is limited to resources. According to Nation News, Barbados experiences more extreme weather events, as well as subtle change to temperature and precipitation patterns. Barbados faces limited financial resources and negibile contributions to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a global scale. Although, Barbados is taking action to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions Barbados still has indentified as having climate change as vulnerable towards agriculture, fishenses, tourism, water, human health, coastal resources, and human settlement. Nation News describes Barbados as experiencing frequent and major climate change impacts and extreme weather events that could decimate its economy in one extreme event. With this type of extreme disaster Barbados can develop a threnting economic. By Barbados taking action according to Nation News, analysis suggest renewal energy projects provide a strong economic investment, with that being said it'll help Barbados be less vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

Barbados mass warning hazards come from landslides. Scotland District the northeast part of Barbados is where land sliding activity occurs the most. Reports describe soil sliding which suggests landslide movement. Earth flows, slumps, and debris flow are the main landslide types present in the Scotland District.  Landslides occur on upper, steep slopes, v-shaped valleys and sharp-crested ridges. Land sliding in the Scotland District is directly related to the response of clay present in the Joes River Formation and Scotland Beds. Economic impacts attribute to landslides are limited to the Scotland District. Roads within the Scotland District incur damage where undermined by failing slopes and blocked by displaced slide material. Agriculture is the other primary economic impact. Ground, cracking, scarps, and gully development are some of the consequences of landslides which renders land unusable for farming. According to Nation News Caribbean should prepare for landslides and flooding. 2016 Hurricane season; Caribbean should prepare for the risks of landslides and flash floods. Adrian Trotman, an Agro meteorologist and chief of Applied Meteorology and Climatology at CIMH, states “recent advances in climate forecasting services for the Caribbean now means that government planners and other bodies can make important decisions based on seasonal forecast from three to six months in advance”. Noted in the Nation News, “we know that advance warning of an extreme event like a hurricane can help us to be more prepared”. By Barbadians being aware of forecast it ensures that they be safe and retreat to a safe place. Another outlet Barbados take actions to alert Barbadians is by holding press conference to discuss forecast in Caribbean and being able to help the regions of six climate sectors; agriculture, disaster management, energy, health, tourism, and water. Being able to prepare and adapt to the expectations of the climate expectations are.

Volcano activity in Barbados

According to the online website Volcano Discovery the latest update: 3 August 2016 (volcanic unrest, eruption warning). Kick'em Jenny an underwater volcano has been a historically active submarine volcano 8 km off the north shore of Grenada, rises 1300 m from the sea floor. In case f an eruption and necessary evacuations, authorities are working on evacuation routes and prepare transport means to be on standby. Radio stations in Grenada, St. Vincent, Barbados, and Trinidad are broadcasting relevant information and updates from the government as they come in. The have also generated a color alert system allowing residents to know at what level should they be more aware of when they should take precaution.

After looking at Barbados seismicity,  reported by today's earthquakes in Barbados I found there was zero earthquakes today zero earthquakes in the past seven days zero earthquakes in the past month and 10 earthquake in past year.  The largest earthquake in Barbados this year was 5.8 in Crane,  Saint Philip, Barbados. A couple of prevention Barbados  is doing to help when a catastrophe hit allow Barbadians to be more prepared for this tragedy. In the latest news provided by prevention web Barbados and Japan sign agreement on disaster prepared preparedness.  Prevention web notes that "The government of Barbados in Japan have signed $1 million agreement aimed at reducing Barbadoes vulnerability to disaster and increasing this country's resilience".  Noted by Maxine Mcclean, " Barbados has the potential to be severely impacted by metrological, geological and biological hazards. Therefore, it is necessary to make strategic investment in reducing risk likely to be faced by Barbadian communities,  and this agreement with the government of Japan contributes to the governments overall plan of disaster reduction". (PreventionWeb)  Stated by Ambassador of Japan to Barbados, Mitushiko Okada "It is our hope that this agreement aid programme will significantly reduce disaster damages in Barbados in the future and will aid Barbados and it adapting it self to climate change". (PreventionWeb)  I believe this agreement will not only help Barbadoes when a disaster strikes but allow Barbadian to feel at ease when a tragedy may occur.  According to article "Barbados making strides in Tsunami preparedness" published on March 2, 2015. The programme is to promote the awareness of when a tsunami or eathquake hits. "Results, Barbadian authorities like others in the region, now benefited from a network of seismic stations  establish to alert countries in less than one minute that and earthquake had occurred".  Judy Thomas, director of the department of emergency management, noted "we started the program as a member of the intergovernmental coordinating group, which spearheads earthquakes and tsunanis in the Caribbean". Ms. Thomas also explains, "earthquakes and tsunamis were still relatively new hazards for Barbados and the Caribbean".  Since 2005 Barbados has been establishing a national warning system for earthquakes and tsunamis noted by, Dr. Lorna Inniss. Dr. Lorna Inniss also makes the statement that, "we expect over the next few years, every March that there would  have been significant progress in the establishment of this nation dissemination programme,  so that more Barbadian can receive the message in real time".  This stride will allow Barbadian to not only be prepared but also be aware of what their country is offering when it comes to their safety.  I believe it is important for citizens to know what the pantry is doing about certain issues that can affect them as a whole.  I also believe that Barbadoes is in the right step towards making sure they are prepared for catastrophes.
